Traditional ethnological event: 10th Gottscheer Culture Days
Traditional ethnological event Gottscheer Culture Days, hosted alternately by the municipalities of Dolenjske Toplice, Semič and Kočevje, is organized to preserve the memory of Gottschee Germans, who lived in this area for more than 6 centuries and significantly co-shaped the culture here. It is intended to preserve their rich heritage, including culture, language, local crafts, cuisine and natural heritage. Gottschee Germans preserved their unique archaic language up until the Second World War, which even Valvasor's contemporaries thought was ancient and difficult to understand, but today only a handful of individuals speak it fluently.
10th Gottscheer Culture Days will be open on Thursday with an exhibition by Mitja Ferenc, on Friday we will learn to bake pobolica cake and enjoy a film in the evening, on Saturday there will be a painting ex-tempore, then church mass and a performance by the chamber choir and a garden party to end the day. On Sunday, there will be a book presentation and a hike through abandoned Gottscheer villages of Stari and Novi Tabor as well as a free guided tour of the Gottscheer Altsiedler Verein Museum.
